The Island's largest gathering for the Life Sciences will showcase the Technology Trust's mission and will offer
specific programs and opportunities for emergent technology companies in Puerto Rico and Latino America
(NORWALK, Conn., June 23, 2011) – The Puerto Rico Science, Technology & Research Trust (The Technology
Trust) will be actively involved in this year's INTERPHEX Puerto Rico to be held October 20-21 at the Puerto Rico
Convention Center in San Juan. Both The Technology Trust and INTERPHEX support the island's economy that
produces over 50% of the medical devices sold in the U.S., hosts over 20 of the world's leading pharmaceutical
companies on the island, and graduates more than 9,000 science and engineering students each year.
The Technology Trust was created as a private, non-for-profit entity to create jobs in Puerto Rico through science
and innovation. The Technology Trust provides ongoing funding for research and development projects and
infrastructure advancements in the Island. According to Executive Director, Tom Farb, "Along with the
infrastructure investments we are making in the Knowledge Corridor, there are many other benefits for young and
mature companies to conduct business in Puerto Rico. As a U.S. Commonwealth, businesses enjoy the protection
of U.S. intellectual property laws as well the familiar regulatory environment provided by the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA). INTERPHEX Puerto Rico provides the ideal environment to showcase everything that
Puerto Rico has to offer."
According to Jesus Soriano, MD, PhD, MBA, Senior Advisor to the Trust, "Our strategic partnership with
INTERPHEX is fully aligned with the objectives of the Trust's Technology Transfer Office". Through our In-Kind
Business Assistance Progam we provide technical and financial assitance to universities, start-up companies and
entepreneurs to develop local techologies into useful products and services. In turn, these companies atract
private investments, create jobs and contribute to the economic development of Puerto Rico," added Dr. Soriano.
Bob Stewart, INTERPHEX Industry Vice President says, "We're extremely pleased to be working with the Trust.
INTERPHEX Puerto Rico, the island's largest gathering of life science professionals and industry suppliers,
provides the perfect forum for the Trust to discuss its mission of promoting technology transfer and product
commercialization as well as to showcase the island's science and technology infrastructure. INTERPHEX Puerto
Rico promotes the island as a globally important center of drug and medical device manufacturing, from basic
research to drug discovery to clinical trials process development through delivery to market. Networking essential to business success is as important here as the exploration of new products and services that enhance human life
and health."
Now in its eighth year, the INTERPHEX Puerto Rico Conference & Exhibition is the Commonwealth's largest
gathering of life science industry suppliers and related professionals, offering exhibits and technical sessions to
provide education and solutions for pharmaceutical and medical device professionals. In addition to running
simultaneously with INTERPHEX Medical Devices and the Latin American Supply Chain, this year's event will
include Buildings Puerto Rico. This new event offering will provide facility managers and other interested buyers
from commercial, industrial, residential and institutional facilities with access to resources that promote
environmental and operational efficiencies.
